Picturesque Stagecoach Road is located in Lane County, Oregon, has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. It was part of the original route from Eugene to Florence on the Oregon Coast, serving as a vital connection for stagecoaches traveling through the area. The road follows the contours of the Siuslaw River and passes through the town of Swisshome.

In 1925, the Wildcat Creek Covered Bridge, also known as the Austa Bridge, was constructed along Stagecoach Road. This bridge crossed the Wildcat Creek near where it meets the larger Siuslaw River. The bridge was named after the nearby community of Austa, which is located near OR 126 between Mapleton and Walton.

The 1930s

During the 1930s, Stagecoach Road and the Wildcat Creek Covered Bridge were bypassed by the construction of the Linslaw Tunnel and the Mapleton Bridge, which were part of the modern OR 126. This new route effectively diverted traffic away from the old Stagecoach Road, giving the Wildcat Creek Covered Bridge a more secluded existence.

Today

Today, Stagecoach Road is a residential area and is also referred to as Old Stagecoach Road or County Highway 5020. It spans approximately 3.5 miles and is located next to Tilden Creek. The road and its surroundings, including the Wildcat Creek Covered Bridge, offer opportunities for passive exploration and a glimpse into the region’s transportation history.

The current condition of Stagecoach Road and the surrounding area is a mix of 75% gravel and the rest is pavement. The road is maintained for local traffic and residential access. The Wildcat Creek Covered Bridge, being a historical structure, is also preserved as a cultural landmark.
